Government Offices

The Head of Government is the Prime Minister, The Honorable Stephenson King of the United Workers Party, appointed Prime Minister in September 2007 after the passing of then Prime Minister Sir John George Melvin Compton. Sir John Compton had led his party to victory in December of 2006 suceeding Dr. Kenny D. Anthony whose St. Lucia Labour Party was voted out by the electorate after nine years in power.

St Lucia is an Independent country and a member of the British Commonwealth. The Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II but a Ceremonial Head of State: The Governor-General represents the queen at proceedings.

In addition to the Office of the Governor General, a two-house system of Parliament exists. It is made up of a Senate and a House of Assembly. The Senate consists of eleven nominated members whilst the House of Assembly consists of seventeen elected Members.

Legal System
There is an independent judiciary, modeled on British Law and an independent Appeals Court common to most of the island of the Eastern Caribbean. There is strong regard for democracy and the rule of law, apparent in efficient working of the parliamentary system and the fact that changes in leadership have always occurred through democratic process of free and fair elections, which are held every four years.
