Atlantic Rally For Cruisers
(Start Nov 20 La Palmas: Finish early Dec Saint Lucia)
For thirty years, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, better known as the ARC, has brought thousands of sailors the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime Atlantic crossing. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been the 'home port' of the ARC since the very first edition of the rally in 1986. Gran Canaria is located at the edge of the tradewind belt, so boats leaving the Canary Islands sail south until they pick up the north east tradewinds which then blow them west across the Atlantic. Classes include Cruising, Racing, Multihull and Open, and crews come from around Europe and the world to participate.
The ARC starts in late November when the tradewinds become established, and the boats arrive in Saint Lucia at the end of the Caribbean hurricane season. Once on the island, they are treated to a fortnight of special events and parties, cultural and environmental activities before heading off to explore the Caribbean islands.
