Let Her Inspire You

Culinary

From the local rums to pepper pots, langouste and bouyon, Saint Lucia is known across the Caribbean for her rich culinary traditions. You’ll experience a palette of flavors that are spicy, warming, and comforting. Immerse yourself in the favorite island dishes harvested from the sea and farm-to-table locally grown produce. Saint Lucia’s foodie experience is truly one-of-a-kind and world-class.

Introduce Yourself to Saint Lucia’s Cuisine

Saint Lucia cuisine is an eclectic mix of American, European, Indian and Caribbean flavors. The signature meal you should have in Saint Lucia is green figs and salt fish, the island’s national dish. Locals boil unripe bananas and then add salt-cured boiled or flaked cod. It’s a hearty dish made with various herbs and spices.

Pair this meal with a plate of fried plantains, a bowl of callaloo soup (a spinach-like soup made from the callaloo plant), or a side of breadfruit. Breadfruit is a staple of Saint Lucia cuisine and resembles a potato, except with a sweeter flavor. In fact, your meal might have all of these elements, leaving you filled to the brim for the rest of your stay!

A Matter of Taste

It has been said that you haven’t had a banana until you’ve had one grown in Saint Lucia. Be sure to try them in the national dish of Green Fig & Salt Fish (we call green bananas figs).

Cool Off With an Island Beverage

While Saint Lucia’s food is often the centerpiece of any visit to the island, it helps to enjoy it with a refreshing beverage. Along with fresh-squeezed fruit juice, residents of Saint Lucia like to open a bottle or two of Piton with their meal, the country’s local beer named after the iconic volcanoes nearby. This is a refreshing drink that’s meant to keep you cool on warm Caribbean days.

Residents and visitors alike also often enjoy sipping from Chairman’s Reserve, the island’s locally-produced rum. While this drink is worth trying by itself to get a feel for its depth and flavor, you can add it to a variety of cocktails created by the island’s mixologists to create fun, tropical drinks.

Sign Up for a Food Tour or Demonstration

If you want to make Saint Lucia’s food the main focus of your visit to the island, consider signing up for a food tour. There are multiple tours to choose from based on your culinary predispositions, and there are demonstrations where you can even learn to cook some of the island’s favorite dishes. A few food tour and demonstration options include:

  • Cook like a Lucian, where you create multiple dishes that originated on the island.
  • Bean to Bar, where you create your own chocolate and other recipes using cocoa beans that you harvest right from the tree.
  • The Other Tour St.Lucia, where you dine with locals and get to know their way of life, and how food relates to it.

However you eat when you are on Saint Lucia, whether you dine at our top-notch restaurants with creative chefs or learn a family secret to spice up a stew, you are sure to feel the love and warmth of the people in the cooking, and will always ask for more.
